Primary provision
Does a lack of provision and encouragement at Primary level means things go wrong right from the beginning in many schools. Are we setting young people up for failure?

Unconfident adult singers
I run a group called "Can't Sing Collective" in my local village - getting about 12 to each session. This is my response to the number of people I know who say they can't - or worse - I wish I could sing. This truly upsets me, to think some people deny themselves the joy of singing. Some are clearly cheating, and can sing, but I've had several genuine cases who were brave enough to turn up. Needless to say, they can all sing!

I'd be interested to make contact with anyone else doing this sort of thing - to exchange tips & repertoire. Also ideas for getting people past the anxiety threshold of coming along in the first place. Also the current lot are now brave enough to want to perform in public - which might put new ones off! Difficult!

PS22 Chorus - amazing kids' choir
Just came across this brilliant elementary school choir in the States, singing songs by Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Tori Amos, Bjork and other iPod favourites.

They have a really enthusiastic teacher and you can see the kids are so into it. Seems they’ve caused a minor media sensation.

Singing – lack of confidence or lack or opportunity?
Why do so many young people feel that they "can't sing"? Is it lack of confidence, or lack of opportunity? How much emphasis should there be on singing in schools?

Secondary school encouragement
As a trainee music teacher in secondary education, I am finding it difficult to motivate the pupils when they have to learn about world music and concert music. All they are interested in is the music they listen to and if they cant reproduce that straight away, they are off to football. Any tips?

Teaching BTEC ND Music Tech (Music Sequencing)
Does anybody have any views on the interperetation of BTEC grading critera in Music Sequencing. Specifically how to interperet "Create Music". What is music in this context? any organised sound? Does it need harmony and rhythm?

Free Ukulele Workshops for Primary Teachers and Pupils.
Hi everyone, Many new teachers enter into primary teaching with little or no music skill or knowledge. The Ukulele offers an alternative to the traditional recorder. It is easy and fast to learn (even with no musical knowledge), the instruments are cheap, you can play full songs after a very short time - keeping childrens attention and it is a great stepping stone up to the guitar later on. It is also a bit 'cooler' than the recorder and may get more boys interested in playing an instrument at an early age. We are offering completely free Ukulele workshops where our teacher will come to your location and give a 2 hour workshop, and show how easily you can learn the Ukulele. We will bring all the equipment to you, so you dont have to worry about a thing. If you are interested, please contact me (Laura Newmarch) at laura.newmarch@musicsales.co.uk Hurry though as we are limited to a certain number of workshops per year! Do get in touch! Thanks Laura

Playing the ocarina
Photos on the Music Manifesto site show iPhones being played as 'flutes'. On closer inspection, these iPhones are actually being played as ocarinas, using the same 'English four-hole' fingering system as that found on primary school ocarinas. Do any teachers have anything to report on how they are using ocarinas in school (real ones, not iPhones) at KS1, KS2 and in Wider Opportunities projects? How do your children get on with the 4-hole fingering system? Do you have any advice for those who would like to start ocarina-playing in their school?

What makes a good music teacher?
Classic FM is asking people to nominate their Music Teacher of the Year, so we've been thinking about just what makes a good music teacher.

You can read what Leonora Davies has to say here but what do you think?

Are there essential qualities all good music teachers share? What does it take to inspire pupils and get the best out of them? Did you have a brilliant music teacher?
