New regulations have come into force regarding charges for music tuition in schools.

The changes affect group music teaching during school hours. Previously, vocal tuition and instrumental lessons for groups of more than four pupils could not be charged for, but as of 1 September this is no longer the case.

Enabling instrumental teaching in groups is intended to go some way to addressing the shortfall in specialist music teachers and the published guidance on the issue states that decisions on group sizes can now be made on "sound educational and pedagogical principles as opposed to economics". This should also mean that lessons in larger groups can be offered at a lower price per person.
