I feel sure there must be many schools up and down the country doing superb work with students teaching students. What is not mentioned on the video clip is just how much the parents are also on board. Clearly one has to ask permission for one to one teaching to happen but they give such positive feedback that it is very heartening! We are now extending this work to embrace our work with the feeder schools, and that has proved very "cool" ! Especially when I take out all 135 of the Boys choir! I would be interested to hear from anyone who may have managed to get similar schemes up and running.
I do not see why these should be separated! It is perfectly possible to have 'fun' whilst working hard. Teaching styles may have changed but our learning objectives have not!
No! The vlaue of singing in a group, large or small will always extend beyond the musical achievements. It is well documented that music offers life skills - team work / indpendence of thought / an ability to react under pressure / sharing of ideas / awareness / empathy etc / common purpose & focus. As an adult, if we no longer sing then the confidence & experiences gained in our youth will remain with us. Singing could never become redundant.
