Music - An Experience or a Subject?
I went through school involved in lots of music making, then music teacher training but felt underconfident as a music teacher. It was only when I got in touch and trained in Kodaly that I experienced music as a subject with a progressive study of skills / concepts / knowledge that I stopped being confused and frustrated and as i gained in understanding I gained in confidence. I firmly believe that school teachers can be provided with a mountain of singing resources and still feel confused and under confident to deliver a singing curriclum that in content will provide meaning to the children if this progression of music is not being taught to teachers. Yes teachers already know there are songs to sing for fun, for assemblies, that relate to topics taught in other subjects e.g history but without knowledge of this progression of singing skills it remains just a range of experiences. I deliver music classes to mums with very young children and also children at key stage 1 and am building
