Party Piece Poll
To highlight the Music Manifesto's aim to put singing back at the heart of all primary school musical activity, we are asking everyone to name a song they could sing unaccompanied.
So tell us, which song could you sing solo if push comes to shove? Post your 'Party Piece' song by logging in and clicking on Reply.

from the Spencer Tracey film, Captains Courageous: "Oh the crew are asleep and the ocean's at rest I'm singing this song to the one I love best Hey ho, little fishes, don't cry, don't cry," etc Used to sing it to my son as a lullaby!
I sing to the lute and guitar accompanying myself, does that count?
not appropriate i feel for the primary age range to sing, but a beautiful irish melody with old fashioned cheesy romantic words. have stood up and sang this many times.
everyone can sing it.....you just go from there, involvement is what is important.
When I was at primary school every school had a choir and someone who specialised in music. I joined the school choir and local church choir and enjoyed singing immensely. Every year we had a competition which involved school choirs learning several songs which they sang together and individual pieces. I clearly remember singing Jerusalem and Rhoslein Rhoslien Rhoslein Red. Everybody felt happy and enjoyed the whole thing. Perhaps part of todays unhappy society is that we do not sing together as we used to. As a trainee teaching assistant I feel very upset that my school does not have anyone who can play the piano so that we can sing songs properly during assemble especially as the infants enjoy singing. All power to the Music Manifesto.
My lyric to Ravel's ravishing "Pavane For a Dead Infanta". Ravel comes out of copyright December 31st 2007. lyricsforclassic.com
The same as a previous submission, used to settle my children as babies. Enjoyed perfecting my rendition time, time and time again. The frustrated section particularly cathartic!
The value of friendship and there always being someone there for you or that you can be there for.
Did this for my FLCM singing diploma and "jazzed" it just to be different in a straight classical recital exam. I PASSED!!
Only if push comes to shove!
3 chords + 3 verses - very easy to remember
Burt Bacharach is a genius songwriter and this has to be my favourite of his, with 'I say a little prayer' and 'Walk on by' coming a close second equal.
One of the first songs I really learnt to sing by rewinding my tape player so I could learn every word and note
The very first pop record I ever bought and had to hide it from my Dad who would not have approved.
This song has such a simple structure but it's very moving and inspirational. There was a wonderful BBC programme about its creation.
Sang it relentlessly as a young person with my sisters!
I agree - this is a beautiful song. even Sting and Jimmy Nail's version!
It sustained me through several summer seasons performing to drunken Brits in Ibiza. It's the ultimate joiner-inner.
The weirdness, and musical adventuressness, of the 60s all packed into one song
Reminds me of my musical roots.

Because all it takes is one voice to sing out courageously, joined by another and another, to help change the world ......
A haunting melody, used to calm my children before and after they were born.
This is a great song... easy to remember lyrics and a catchy melody. Other songs which came a close runners up are Brown Eyed Girl and Mr Tamborine Man.
You can't go wrong with a good ABBA track
This song featured at the end of "Lucky Break", a movie with Timothy Spall, who sang it at end at the piano. I found that performance incredibly moving and wanted to sing it. I found that it has hundreds and hundreds of versions and I made my own version and love to sing it myself with or unaccompanied.
Who saw the fantastic Tv programme featuring "Young at Heart", a group of elderly people singing contemporary pop songs? The poetry of Coldplay's "Fix You" came out really strongly. I have older people, including one man of 76 amongst my pupils. I would love to encourage older people to sing(appropriate) contemporary songs. They usually feel they want to be nostalgic.
Fantastic! So do I have elderly folk as singing pupils and in my choir! Many have had or are still suffering serious illness and find singing a lifeline and one of the most spiritually uplifting activities they have in their lives. Up the wrinklies, I say!! After all, they have so much to sing about!
Simple and well known, audience can enjoy and easy to improvise on without going pearshaped!

Not sure if it's the Beach Boys' cover or the traditional version I learnt at school in the 70s doing 'Singing Together'. Suspect it's the latter. Either way, when push came to shove this was the only song I found I could recall and honestly sing all the way through - words and tune. (OK, so the harmonies are still a bit of a challenge!) 'I Don't Know How to Love Him' from Jesus Christ Superstar was a close second! I think this poll's a great idea. Come on everybody, what's yours?????
