Music and the Deaf
Paul Whittaker, founder and Artistic Director of Music and the Deaf, says "Almost all Music Services admit they have no budget or training to work with deaf pupils." Are the music education needs of the deaf being ignored?

Teaching a deaf singing pupil

I have a pupil who is deaf and would love to discuss my work with this person with any one else who has experience of teaching singing to a deaf person. This person has a good strong voice and loves singing.

Some years ago I taught a girl who had an 80% hearing impairment. We experimented with learning to feel vibrations where certain notes correctly resonated in her face. She learned to place notes and to sing in tune by remembering where to place the notes and recognising the vibrations. She performed at a public school event with some success. Hilary Osborn

I am deaf in one ear and I do make a point of teaching aslan in our choir and helping deaf or hearing impaired students.
