Introduction to Kodaly
Location: Morley College, 61 Westminster Bridge Road, London
Date: 18/04/2008
Type: Live event
This 1-day workshop will give an introduction to the Kodály Principles of Music Education in Early Years.
The Kodály approach focuses on learning musicianship through singing using the folk songs of the nation. The "tools" of the method (tonic solfa and rhythm solfa) will be explored with reference to material suitable for young children.
The Kodály approach is child centred and taught in a logical, sequential manner: The children learn, unconsciously at first, all the musical concepts through playing and singing musical games and rhymes. Later, the musical concepts are made conscious and then reinforced. Great emphasis is placed on developing the child's inner hearing, intonation and musical memory.
By the end of the course, trainees will be able to:
- Have a basic knowledge of the Kodáy principles of music education.
- Understand how these concepts relate to music in early years. 2. Understand how to choose appropriate repertoire to suit young voices.
- Understand how to develop children's musical skills from an early age.
- Understand how singing games can support holistic development.
- Understand how to structure a successful music programme based on the Kodaly approach
This session will be a practical workshop and will focus on the following areas: Singing games and rhymes suitable for young children, holistic development through singing, development of musical skills in early years
